Timeline

1800s- Law enforcement units were too small to have much impact on crimes.
- Established settlement houses
1853- First paid fire department
1860s grossly inadaquate piped water or none at all.
1870- city water becomes safer by filtration.
1871- the great Chicogo fire lasted october 8-10th
1873- Street cars were introduced in San Francisco
1874- Introduction of the practical automatic fire sprinkler
- replaecment of wood as a building material with brick, stone,or concrete.
1879- New York passed a law that set minimum standerds for plumbing and ventilation in apartments
- Landloards built tenements with air shafts that provide an outside window for each room.
1886- Charles Stover and Stanton Coit found settlement house in united states.
1889- Jane Addamd and Ellen Gates Starr founded Chicago's Hull house.
1890- Janie Porter Berrett founded Locust Street social settlement in Hampton, Virginia the first settlement house for African Americans.
1897- Boston had electric subways.
1900- many citys had developed sewer lines and created sanitation departments.
- Most citys had full time profesional fire departments.
1906- April 18, San Fransisco earthquake fire lasted for 4 days.
1908- Introduction of chlorination for water.
1910- About 400 settlement houses were operating in citys across the country.
